Swiatek and Rybakina out on day of Wimbledon upsets

Wimbledon 2026 saw two major upsets on Saturday, July 4, as defending champion and third seed Iga Swiatek was eliminated in the third round by Alexandra Eala 7-6 (11-9) 6-2, while second seed Elena Rybakina, the 2022 champion, lost to Belgium's Elise Mertens 7-6 (7-4) 6-1. It is the third time in five years Swiatek has exited Wimbledon in the third round, and the second consecutive year Rybakina has failed to reach the second week. Rybakina's defeat also guarantees Aryna Sabalenka retains the world number one ranking.
