Alex Eala, a 21-year-old Filipina tennis player, won her first WTA Tour singles title on Monday, August 3, defeating top seed Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the final of the Mubadala DC Open in Washington, D.C. Eala became the first tennis player from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour singles title, having come back from a set down after the rain-interrupted final resumed on Monday. Ranked No. 28 entering the week, she is projected to break into the world's top 20 ahead of the U.S. Open.
