Tennis player retires from French Open match after falling over advertising block on court
Turkish tennis player Zeynep Sönmez, world No. 66, was forced to retire injured from a French Open doubles match on Friday, May 29, 2026, after tripping over a small Lacoste advertising block at the back of the court in Paris. The incident occurred in just the third game of her match alongside partner Tatjana Maria against Dayana Yastremska and Anhelina Kalinina, as Sönmez ran backwards to hit a backhand and collapsed into the back fence. Umpire Aurélie Tourte immediately called for medical assistance following the fall.
