The huge 2026 F1 technology change that's going under the radar
Formula 1's 2026 regulations introduced a switch to advanced sustainable fuels alongside the move to larger batteries, but this change has received far less attention despite being an equally significant foundational pillar of the rules overhaul. According to The Race's Jon Noble, writing on 18 May 2026, the sustainable fuel transition has been largely embraced without controversy, unlike the contentious battery and power-split debates. Notably, the shift to sustainable fuels also opens the door for a potential return of V8 engines to grand prix racing from 2031 onwards, as burning fossil fuels would no longer be a requirement.
