The Open: R&A 'getting pretty close' to staging major at Portmarnock

R&A chief executive Mark Darbon has stated the organisation is 'getting pretty close' to staging The Open Championship at Portmarnock Golf Club in Dublin, which would mark the first time the major has been held outside the United Kingdom. The R&A first announced the possibility of Portmarnock hosting golf's oldest championship in 2023, with the Irish government pledging support of up to 40 million euros. Portmarnock has previously hosted both the men's and women's amateur championships.
