UK Athletics fined after death of Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei
UK Athletics was fined £350,000 after pleading guilty to corporate manslaughter over the 2017 death of UAE Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei, a 36-year-old discus thrower who had competed at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. Hayayei was killed when a metal throwing cage collapsed on him while he was training at the Newham Leisure Centre in London ahead of the World Para Athletics Championships. Investigators found that stabilising metal lattice base plates for the discus cage were missing, leaving the equipment dangerously unstable, and UK Athletics entered a guilty plea in February.
