US Open begins with a lot more bogeys than birdies at Shinnecock Hills
The first round of the 126th U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills on June 18 proved extremely difficult, with high winds and unforgiving fescue grass producing far more bogeys than birdies among the 156 competing golfers. A two-hour fog delay added to the challenges, and at various points during the early wave only four to six players were under par. The tough conditions drew comparisons to historic high-scoring U.S. Opens, including the 1901 championship at Myopia Hunt Club where Willie Anderson shot 43-over par.
