Top-seeded Alexander Zverev defeated Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-7 (8), 6-3 in the third round of the ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters, despite letting two match points slip in the second-set tiebreaker. US Open finalist Ben Shelton was eliminated by 21-year-old Frenchman Arthur Gea 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), with Gea converting his first match point in the second-set tiebreaker. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner had already withdrawn from the tournament due to a right knee injury, leaving Zverev with an opportunity to finish the season ranked No. 1 for the first time.
