Wawrinka’s emotional goodbye note to US Open: ‘Forever grateful. Forever New York’

Stan Wawrinka, who is retiring from professional tennis this season, has written an emotional farewell message to the US Open on Instagram. The Swiss star, a former world No. 3, won his third and final Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows in 2016, defeating then-world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in four sets, and compiled a 46-16 career record at the tournament since his debut there in 2005. Although he is not competing at this year's US Open, Wawrinka reflected on how New York became one of his favourite places and credited the city with bringing out some of the strongest emotions of his career.
