'We had a great time and it stays with you forever' - Grand National winner and 'life-changer' Auroras Encore dies at 24
Auroras Encore, the 66-1 shock winner of the 2013 Grand National ridden by Ryan Mania, has died at the age of 24 after 12 years of retirement. The horse, bought for just 9,500 guineas by trainer Sue Smith, won eight races and earned over £725,000 in prize-money across a 47-start career, with his Aintree victory being the first Grand National win for a Yorkshire-trained horse since 1960. Trainer Harvey Smith's grandson Joel Parkinson confirmed the horse had enjoyed a happy retirement, while jockey Ryan Mania described the win as 'life-changing.'
