Women’s Tennis Association implements compulsory gene testing

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour has introduced a mandatory one-time screening process requiring all players to be tested for the SRY gene, which determines whether undifferentiated gonads develop into testes rather than ovaries, in order to maintain eligibility for the women's category. The new policy aligns the WTA with the International Olympic Committee, World Athletics, and World Boxing, and replaces a previous rule that allowed transgender women and non-binary players to compete provided their testosterone levels remained below 2.5 nmol/L for at least two years prior to and during competition. Players must also sign a document acknowledging that refusal to undergo testing could result in disciplinary action.
