Women’s tennis tour announces prize money parity with men’s events
The Women's Tennis Association has announced that all combined WTA 1000 tournaments will award equal prize money to women and men starting from 2027, describing it as a 'major milestone' in the fight for equality. The Italian Open is among the major events joining the initiative. The announcement echoes a long-standing inequality highlighted by Billie Jean King, who earned just $600 for winning the 1970 Italian Open while men's winner Ilie Nastase received $3,500.
