Women’s tennis tour introduces mandatory gene testing for eligibility

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has introduced a mandatory one-time gene test for all players wishing to compete in the women's category, effective from Tuesday. The screening targets the SRY gene, which is linked to male-typical sex development, and can be conducted via a cheek swab or blood sample. The policy mirrors eligibility mandates already adopted by World Athletics for its competitions and by the International Olympic Committee for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
