World Series darts: Champ MVG crashes out in R1

World darts champion Michael van Gerwen was eliminated in the first round of the World Series of Darts in Amsterdam on Thursday, losing 6-5 to late replacement Daryl Gurney, despite holding a 5-3 lead and having six match darts. Gurney, standing in for the withdrawn Lourence Ilagan, sealed victory with a 32 checkout and advances to the round of 16. Elsewhere, World No. 2 Luke Humphries beat Jermaine Wattimena 6-4, while Dutch No. 1 Gian van Veen defeated Chris Dobey 6-2.
