WTA to require tennis players to undergo genetic sex testing
The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) is introducing a mandatory genetic sex testing policy for all players wishing to compete on the WTA Tour, effective Tuesday. Players will be required to provide a cheek swab, blood, or saliva sample to test for the presence of the SRY gene, which is located on the Y chromosome and is responsible for the development of male characteristics. This policy is part of the latest edition of the WTA's women's eligibility rules, making tennis the latest sport to implement such genetic testing for women.
